Rare 19th century mahogany and porcelain 4 poster bed circa 1889. Debenham antiques are pleased to offer this stunning and unique 4 poster bed of grand proportions. Quite likely to have been made by Hobbs & co. This bed used to be in the honeymoon suite of the angel hotel, bury st Edmunds in England, which is a landmark hotel in the east of England. Still baring 1930’s paper labels of Simkin’s depository of Colchester on its frame, puts this bed being in the east of England for a number of years. During being restored we discovered welsh and English newspapers inside the porcelain sections dated from 1889, which provides us with a very accurate date to when it was made. This bed is constructed from many sections and elements so our description will start with the 3 sided architectural cornice, which is decorated with a lower reeded edge, salt and pepper tooth inlay, contrasting coloured mahogany and finished with alternating cross and ball applied carvings. These 3 sections attach to the 1 piece canopy roof, which has 4 panels each decorated with inlaid fans and stringing. Underneath the canopy roof are 3 removable brass rods for the suspension of a fabric or curtain. The back board echoes the canopy roof in its design, complete with a paneled cushioned headrest and block back legs and supports, the main feature of the bed and what makes it different from anything we have seen before are the front posts, which comprise of separate sections of porcelain, very much in the majolica taste. Urn and vase shapes each decorated with painted flowers/butterflies further decorated with gold leaves and gilt elements. Interior padded footboard, with a beautifully inlaid bed end with carved swags and roundels. Beautifully hand carved front legs, with applied plaques that cover the construction holes, terminating on carved front foot. Both side rails have been inlaid and strung the same way, with the same carved design as the front end. Comes supplied with a duvan which probably dates from the 1950’s. Duvan is supported by the rails, wooden slats and a front to back cross beam. This bed is a minimum 4 person job for construction. Expected minor surface marks to woodwork. Restoration to porcelain elements which understandably had accumulated a few chips and marks of the years. Please see pictures with all possible dimensions on. A truly wonderful and unique bed, ready to adorn any home.
