This chair was manufactured by Jacob & Josef Kohn (J & J Kohn, father Jacob and son Josef) around 1900, the main competitor of Thonet at the end of the 19th century. The firm worked with designers of the Wiener Werkstätte (amongst others Josef Hoffmann en Koloman Moser). Marked underneath the seat: “Jacob & Josef Kohn, Teschen Austria”. This chair model no. 17 was designed by Michael Thonet around 1865. It is said that the design was based on the architecture of Crystal Palace (London).
This chair is larger than the later no. 17/no. 207 chairs.
